Dr Stephen Webb has spent this past long weekend at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Melbourne teaching a two and half-day intensive course in the management of injury victims. The Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) course emphasises life-saving skills and a systematic clinical approach to the management of unstable patients in the first 1–2 hours following injury. Participants are made up of doctors who are involved in the early treatment of serious injuries in urban or rural areas, whether or not sophisticated emergency facilities are available, including surgeons, emergency physicians, rural GPs and anaesthetists.
Dr Webb has been an EMST instructor for more than 20 years, allowing him to maintain his life-saving skills and keep abreast of new developments…just in case he needs them.
This year one of Dr Webb’s tasks was to act as a severely injured victim in need of care. We thought you might like to see photos. Don’t worry – it’s just make-up. Marcus Choi – one of our medical students from 2021 was also an actor in the weekend’s course. He’d been stabbed!
