Medical research – Future Health Today

Charlton Medical is involved in quality medical research activities and data from your visit may be used for this purpose. City Standards; Country Care provides us with an ideal format to keep you up-to-date with these activities.  There are ethical and legal requirements for both researchers and GPs to protect patient privacy and safety and you will have been asked to consent to your medical information being used for this purpose during your first consultation as a new patient.  It is important for you to remember that you can always request that your data is not used for research purposes and that this will not impact the medical care that you will receive.

Future Health Today uses data from general medical practice records to automate the detection of chronic disease so that risk of chronic disease can be detected earlier and conditions can be managed earlier leading to improved health outcomes.  The program is a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Western Health.

More than 11 million Australians have at least one major chronic disease and these account for more than 1/3 of potentially preventable hospital admissions.  Through screening and early intervention, Future Health Today is anticipated to reduce these admissions and to improve quality of life. The research is currently focussing on heart disease, Type II Diabetes and kidney disease.

Although data about your medical condition may be submitted to Future Health Today, it is important to note that no identifying data is included and you cannot be recognised by the researchers.

You can read more about the research Charlton Medical is involved with in the resource tab of the website. Please feel free to speak to our team if you would like more information about how we keep your personal and health information private.
